CHI St. Alexius nurses try for second time to unionize

A group of nurses at CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck, N.D., are once again trying to unionize, according to local TV station KX News.

Nurses in favor of joining the Minnesota Nurses Association cited their desire to improve patient care.

"Nurses are the ones at the bedside providing care to our patients. And right now, we feel like the best way to continue in providing the best care we can is to come together collectively so we can have a voice in the type of care we provide," Leslie Wenger, a registered nurse at CHI, told KX News.

She did not elaborate on her concerns.

CHI St. Alexius officials, in a statement obtained by the TV station, said they respect the right of nurses to participate in a unionization election, but hope nurses "will vote to preserve our direct working relationship, enabling us to enhance the ways we work together to serve our patients."

A union election is scheduled for early next week. A 2017 effort to unionize failed 158-151.
