The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services released the results of a formal inspection of Upper Peninsula Health System-Marquette (Mich.) Monday and found the hospital "in compliance with the Medicare Conditions of Participation and will continue to be deemed to meet applicable Medicare requirements based upon accreditation by the Joint Commission," according to TV6-FoxUp News.
UPHS-Marquette nurses filed a written complaint with MDHHS Aug. 24. The complaint comprised 200-plus forms documenting various instances of unsafe patient care and safety concerns. Inspectors from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs conducted an unannounced, two-day onsite inspection Sept. 19 and Sept. 20, according to the report.
The agency completed its inspection and informed UPHS-Marquette of its findings Sept. 21, stating the hospital was in compliance of all health and safety standards, the report states.
The public report did not confirm or deny the individual cases of patient health and safety concerns highlighted by the nurses in their original complaint, TV6-FoxUp News reports.
In a statement to TV6-FoxUp News, UPHS-Marquette Regional Director of Marketing and Business Development Victor Harrington said, "Late last week, we received the official findings of [the] survey and we are very pleased to report that the surveying authorities found zero deficiencies at our hospital ... Any survey performed by regulatory authorities is comprehensive in order to ensure full compliance with accreditation standards. Numerous nurses and other staff were interviewed during the survey process, and scores of records were examined and analyzed."
"Receiving zero deficiencies from this team of highly experienced nurse surveyors is outstanding and a strong endorsement of the quality care being delivered daily at UPHS–Marquette," the statement continued. "We know these results would not be possible without the hard work, dedication and tireless compassion of our employees, physicians and volunteers."
The Michigan Nurses Association, which represents UPHS-Marquette nurses, told TV6-FoxUp News it "had not received any official notification of the investigation report" as of Oct. 16, and "the nurses who filed individual reports about unsafe conditions weren't interviewed by inspectors."
