Survey: 73% of baby boomer nurses plan to retire within 3 years

AMN Healthcare, one of the nation's largest workforce solutions and healthcare staffing company, released its 2017 survey of registered nurses.

For the survey, 3,347 RNs provided their views on issues such as leadership, retirement and nursing shortages.

Here are seven survey findings.

Leadership

1. Eighty-two percent of respondents said healthcare needs more nurse leaders. Only 5 percent disagreed.

2. A majority of respondents (61 percent) said they would not consider a leadership position.

3. Fifty-five percent of millennial nurses, 58 percent of Gen X nurses and 68 percent of baby boomer nurses said they were not considering moving into a leadership role.

Retirement

4. The survey found 73 percent of baby boomer nurses plan to retire in three years or less.

Nursing shortages

5. Nearly half of respondents (48 percent) agreed nursing shortages have worsened in the last five years. This compares to the 37 percent of nurses who said the same in 2015.

Job satisfaction

6. A large number of respondents (83 percent) are happy they chose nursing as their career.

7. At the same time, less than half of nurses (44 percent) said they don't believe they have enough time to spend with patients, according to the survey.
