Pennsylvania nurses union fires executive director, names interim replacement

The Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals confirmed it fired its executive director over "some financial irregularities."

The union, which represents 8,300 nurses and health professionals across the state, said via news release it "has demanded and received the resignation of Bill Cruice, the organization's former executive director."

The union did not provide details of the financial irregularities, which were discovered during a routine audit conducted at the request of PASNAP. But The Inquirer cites a federal filing in which the union "described $120,687 in vacation and salary overpayments that occurred over three years." The publication was unable to reach Mr. Cruice for comment.

PASNAP officials said they immediately notified the Department of Labor of the initial audit findings so the agency could investigate further. The union is also conducting its own internal investigation.

"As always, we will continue to fight for improved patient care and safety and better working conditions for our 8,300 members across Pennsylvania. The executive board and [s]taff of PASNAP take our duty to safeguard our members' resources seriously. This in no way will affect day to day operations, and we will continue to represent our members without interruption," said PASNAP President Patricia Eakin, RN, BSN.

Mark Warshaw, who has been an organizing director at PASNAP, is serving as interim executive director.
