Nurses at Stanford's ValleyCare Medical Center to join union

Kelly Gooch -

Nurses at Stanford Health Care's ValleyCare Medical Center in Pleasanton, Calif., voted to unionize on April 18.

With the vote, 400 ValleyCare registered nurses will join the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United, which has 100,000 members statewide.

"This vote is about being pro-nurse and having a place at the table to make decisions that affect patient care and our practice at ValleyCare — and having a collective voice with CNA," said Cynthia Arambulo, RN.

According to the union, nurses specifically seek to address wages, as well as staffing and patient care issues such as assignment of nurses and mandatory overtime.

ValleyCare said it respects the nurses' unionization vote in a statement to Becker's Hospital Review.

"We have always believed that working directly with our nurses is best, but we respect their right to vote and the outcome of the election," the statement reads. "We will move forward in a positive way that reflects our respect for all our professionals and commitment to our community."
