Michigan Nurses Association meets with hospital over elimination of highly-skilled crisis nursing unit

Representatives from the Michigan Nurses Association will meet with officials from Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Borgess Medical Center Thursday to discuss the implications of the hospital's crisis nursing department closure, according to mlive.com.

The "Service With a Task" is a team of 12 nurses that helped treat heart attack and stroke victims, as well as any other patients at the hospital in need crisis intervention. While the hospital says the SWAT nurses could be absorbed into the critical care department, MNA representatives are worried the elimination of the department could indicate layoffs for nurses at the hospital.

Hospital officials did not deny that they could be reorganizing staff levels.

"We continually review staffing models, within the parameters of our collective bargaining agreements to ensure efficiency of our resources, while providing the highest quality and most compassionate care. At this time, we have no information to share regarding personnel matters," hospital officials told mlive.com.
