Michigan legislation proposes overtime limits for nurses

Michigan lawmakers reviewed three House bills this week that would prohibit mandatory overtime requirements for nurses, reports the Lansing State Journal.

The bills would also require hospitals to place a limit on nurse-to-patient ratios and publicize staffing ratios.

The legislation comes two weeks after state auditors issued a report saying nurses employed in at least one state-run hospital worked too many hours.

While many nurse advocacy groups believe the policies would limit nurse fatigue and improve patient safety, some hospital leaders worry mandated staff ratios would pose a challenge for healthcare organizations already struggling to fill positions during a nursing shortage.

The House's health policy committee has not voted on the bills yet.
