Maimonides Hospital workers rally over layoffs

Kelly Gooch -

Workers at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., rallied this week in the wake of plans to lay off up to 200 hospital employees, according to Spectrum News NY1.

Maimonides notified staff of the layoff plans last month, attributing the move to cost cutting. Affected workers include non-union employees as well as members of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and the New York State Nurses Association. The hospital noted no more than 100 of the 2,700 1199SEIU workers on staff will be affected.

During the rally, workers expressed concern about how the layoffs will affect employees and patient care, according to the report.

"We all have families. We have little children. We have mortgages, we have rent and we have to put food on the table for our families," one worker said, according to Spectrum News NY1. "If we lose our jobs we got nothing."
