Hospitals and unions: 12 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review reported on the following hospital-union events — including protests, legal issues and elections — on or after June 6.

1. Johns Hopkins trying to block unionization, nurses charge
Registered nurses at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Hospital revealed June 25 they have filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging the hospital hindered nurses' legal right to discuss unionization.

2. Nurses at Staten Island University Hospital plan July 3 strike
Nurses at Staten Island (N.Y.) University Hospital's North site, part of New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health, notified hospital officials of their intent to strike July 3 over alleged unfair labor practices.

3. Massachusetts health center workers vote to unionize
Workers at Whittier Street Health Center in Roxbury, Mass., voted to join 1199 Service Employees International Union United Healthcare Workers East on June 20.

4. Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, unionized workers finalize 3-year contracts
Unionized healthcare workers ratified labor deals with New London, Conn.-based Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

5. California medical center nurses OK labor deal
Enloe Medical Center in Chico, Calif., approved a new labor deal with registered nurses.

6. Berkshire Medical Center, nurses reach agreement, avert strike
Pittsfield, Mass.-based Berkshire Medical Center and nurses represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association reached a tentative agreement June 14, averting a strike and ending a dispute that lasted more than 20 months.

7. Copley Hospital, nurses reach contract agreement
Unionized nurses at Morrisville, Vt.-based Copley Hospital ratified a new labor deal with the facility.

8. California nurses move closer to strike
Registered nurses at Alhambra (Calif.) Hospital Medical Center voted for the option to strike.

9. University of Vermont Medical Center nurses authorize 2-day strike
Unionized nurses at University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington voted for the option to call a two-day strike.

10. Baystate Franklin, nurses OK labor deal: 7 things to know
Registered nurses of Greenfield, Mass.-based Baystate Franklin Medical Center ratified a contract with the hospital June 11 after two strikes and more than a year of negotiations.

11. Washington state nurses picket over staffing
Nurses at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett (Wash.) held lunchtime pickets June 6 at Providence's Colby and Pacific campuses.

12. Bartlett Regional Hospital workers get pay hike in 3-year labor deal
Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau, Alaska, agreed to a labor deal with healthcare workers.
