Hospitals and unions: 11 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review reported on the following events related to hospital-union relationships — including contracts, protests, legal issues and elections — since March 16.

1. Labor board to hear nurses' complaints against Berkshire Medical Center: 9 things to know
The National Labor Relations Board determined an administrative law judge will hear three unfair labor practice charges filed against Pittsfield, Mass.-based Berkshire Medical Center by the Massachusetts Nurses Association.

2. Unionized nurses' allegations of employee coercion at UPHS-Marquette spur NLRB complaint
The National Labor Relations Board issued a complaint and notice of hearing in relation to allegations filed by Michigan nurses against Upper Peninsula Health System-Marquette.

3. New York governor calls for investigation into Albany Medical Center nurses' abuse complaints
New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged the New York State Department of Labor to investigate allegations of threatening and coercive behavior at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center, according to the timesunion.

4. NLRB takes up SEIU complaint over Mayo's Christmas work stoppage in Albert Lea
The National Labor Relations Board has scheduled a hearing with respect to a union's allegations that Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic violated federal labor law when it banned workers from returning to work following a one-day strike in Albert Lea, according to a notice from the NLRB.

5. Baystate Franklin nurses plan to strike in April
Nurses at Greenfield, Mass.-based Baystate Franklin Medical Center revealed new strike plans March 26 nearly one month after postponing a previously scheduled walkout.

6. Minnesota hospital workers picket over contract
Workers at Minneapolis-based Hennepin Healthcare picketed March 17 over contract negotiations.

7. Virtua nurses agree to tentative labor deal, avert strike
Approximately 1,500 registered nurses at Marlton, N.J.-based Virtua Health reached a proposed contract agreement March 15, averting a potential strike, according to a union news release. 

8. Kaiser Permanente reaches tentative labor deal with 19k healthcare workers
Tens of thousands registered nurses and nurse practitioners at facilities owned by Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente reached a tentative labor deal with the healthcare giant March 16, according to a union news release.

9. Dignity Health closes 5-year labor deal with 15k California workers
Tens of thousands healthcare workers at facilities owned by San Francisco-based Dignity Health ratified a new labor deal with management, according to a union news release.

10. Union nurses protest staffing levels at California hospital
Nurses at St. Joseph Hospital, Eureka (Calif.), part of St. Joseph Health, Humboldt County, picketed March 15 over staffing issues, according to a News Channel 3 report.

11. Pennsylvania nurses, technologists rally over staffing
Registered nurses and technologists rallied and picketed March 15 at Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) General Hospital, according to a joint union news release.
