7 physicians resign from Maine Coast Memorial Hospital

Ellsworth-based Maine Coast Memorial Hospital is losing seven physicians, according to a Maine Public report.

Most of the physicians who are resigning come from the hospital's emergency department.

Hospital officials attribute the resignations, as well as other medical staff turnover in recent years, to quality improvement efforts since Brewer-based Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems acquired Maine Coast Memorial in 2015, according to the report. For instance, Maine Coast Memorial President John Ronan told the publication the hospital created a collaborative under which physicians within the system can take work at various emergency departments as needed. Mr. Ronan noted some physicians may not be pleased with these efforts.

"We want to reassure the community that while there has been some turnover with providers, it's still great care here and we're still working through plans to make it better care than it has ever been," Mr. Ronan told Maine Public.

The physicians departing did not speak with Maine Public. However, the report states "other physicians who have left in recent years say the turnover stems from the administration's increasingly caustic relationship with providers."
