Hospitals and unions: 9 conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review reported on the following hospital-union events — including protests and elections — on or after June 27.  

1. New York hospitals reach tentative deal with state's biggest healthcare union
A group representing about 90 New York hospitals and nursing homes has reached a tentative three-year agreement with the state's largest healthcare workers union.

2. McLaren Lapeer Region, nurses union reach tentative deal after strike authorization vote
McLaren Lapeer (Mich.) Region, a 222-bed acute care hospital, and unionized nurses reached a tentative contract agreement on July 13, two days after nurses authorized a walkout.

3. Rhode Island nurses set strike date
Healthcare workers at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence plan to strike July 23.

4. UVM Medical Center nurses begin 2-day strike
Unionized nurses at University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington began a 48-hour strike July 12.

5. Providence hospital RNs get pay raises in new contract
Unionized registered nurses at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett (Wash.) ratified a three-year labor deal with the hospital.

6. Catholic Health hospital employees picket amid contract negotiations
Employees at Mount St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, N.Y., picketed July 10 over staffing.

7. Ohio union nurses tackle patient, nurse safety issues at Cincinnati hospital with bargaining agreement
The Registered Nurses Association, a local union of the Ohio Nurses Association, ratified a three-year contract agreement with the University of Cincinnati Medical Center on June 20.

8. Nurses, CHS reach agreement after strike at Pennsylvania hospital
Nurses at First Hospital in Kingston, Pa., reached a labor deal with the hospital's owner, Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems, after several months of negotiations and a one-day strike.

9. Nearly 200 Oregon hospital workers join union
Healthcare workers at Providence Milwaukie (Ore.) Hospital voted in favor of unionization on June 14.
