Hospitals and unions: 12 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review has reported the following hospital-union events — including protests, contract agreements and legal issues — since Sept. 25.

1. Nurses from 2 Arizona hospitals vote to unionize
Registered nurses from St. Joseph's and St. Mary's hospitals in Tucson, Ariz., voted to join National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United.

2. Healthcare workers to deliver petitions to Kaiser Permanente executives over job outsourcing
Healthcare workers in California announced plans to present employee-signed petitions to Kaiser Permanente executives in Pasadena, Calif., over job outsourcing.

3. University of California healthcare workers schedule strike
Patient care technical workers at University of California campuses plan to strike Oct. 23-25 at UC medical centers.

4. Nurses from 17 HCA hospitals reach tentative labor deal
Registered nurses at 17 hospitals affiliated with Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare reached tentative labor deals.

5. Nurses at Hackensack Meridian hospital lose bid to decertify union
Nurses at Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin, N.J., will not vote on whether to remain unionized.

6. Michigan Medicine nurses approve contract with pay raises of 3% to 4%
Nurses ratified a contract agreement with Ann Arbor-based Michigan Medicine.

7. Battle heats up between Stanford Health Care, union over hospital charge initiative
Stanford (Calif.) Health Care and an employees union are at odds over a November ballot initiative to place a 15 percent cap on hospital charges in Palo Alto, Calif., The Stanford Daily reported. 

8. Tenet hospital in Michigan accused of unfair labor practices
The National Labor Relations Board has charged Commerce Township, Mich.-based Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital with multiple labor law violations. 

9. Pottstown Hospital nurses ratify labor deal
Pottstown (Pa.) Hospital nurses voted Oct. 8 to ratify a three-year contract agreement.

10. UPMC workers strike; nonunion hospital workers launch political action committee
Dozens of UPMC hospital workers in Pittsburgh went on strike Oct. 4 in support of their right to form a union, according to a Tribune-Review report.

11. Kaiser Permanente, Alliance of Health Care Unions reach tentative labor deal
Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente and the Alliance of Health Care Unions reached a three-year tentative agreement after about five months of negotiations.

12. UVM Medical Center nurses ratify labor deal
Nurses ratified a contract  with University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.
