Hospitals and unions: 12 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review reported on the following hospital-union events — including protests and legal issues — since July 19.

1. Vermont union seeks delay in hospital budget approval amid contract negotiations
The union representing about 1,800 nurses at University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington urged the state's healthcare board to delay approving the hospital's fiscal year 2019 budget until a contract agreement is ratified.

2. Allegheny Valley Hospital workers vote for option to strike
Workers at Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights, Pa., voted Aug. 16 to authorize a possible strike.

3. 560 Providence Tarzana workers strike
Approximately 560 workers at Providence Tarzana (Calif.) Medical Center went on strike Aug. 16 over wages and staffing.

4. Vermont hospital board told to get active in labor talks
U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., urged the University of Vermont Medical Center Board of Trustees to be more involved in contract negotiations between management and the union representing about 1,800 registered nurses, nurse practitioners and licensed practical nurses.

5. Rhode Island Hospital, nurses file separate federal labor complaints
Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and the union representing workers there accused each other of unfair labor practices amid contract negotiations.

6. Bucks stop here: Vermont nurses divest in protest
AFT Vermont, the parent of the union representing nurses at University of Vermont Medical Center, is divesting its funds from New England Federal Credit Union to put pressure on the hospital's board, which includes two bank board members.

7. UPMC bans on workers violated law, labor board rules
The National Labor Relations Board ruled Aug. 6 that Pittsburgh-based UPMC unlawfully prohibited off-duty workers from unionization efforts.

8. Rhode Island hospital nurses vote no confidence in leadership, keep potential strike on the table
Unionized nurses and other workers at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence voted no confidence in leadership Aug. 2.

9. McLaren Macomb nurses picket over contract
Nurses at McLaren Macomb in Mount Clemens, Mich., picketed Aug. 1 amid contract negotiations,

10. Nurses picket at HCA hospitals in Las Vegas, Corpus Christi
Registered nurses at hospitals affiliated with Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare picketed July 24, citing high turnover and understaffing.

11. Rhode Island hospital workers begin 3-day strike
Unionized nurses and other workers at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children's Hospital, both in Providence, began a three-day strike July 23.

Illinois hospital workers protested in Chicago July 23 over wages and union rights.
