Hospitals and unions: 11 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review reported on the following events related to hospital-union relationships — including protests, legal issues and elections — since April 13.

1. Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital workers hold picket amid contract negotiations
Union nurses at Detroit Medical Center's Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce Charter Township, Mich., held an informational picket April 25 amid negotiations for their first contract with management.

2. 24k U of California hospital, college workers to strike May 7-9
Tens of thousands of union workers at University of California hospitals and college campuses will strike in May.

3. Nurses at 2 Pennsylvania hospitals to hold one-day strike: 7 things to know
Registered nurses at First Hospital, a private psychiatric facility in Kingston, Pa., and Moses Taylor Hospital, a 214-bed, acute care facility in Scranton, Pa., began a 24-hour strike April 25.

4. Workers at outpatient clinics affiliated with Dignity Health vote to unionize
Healthcare workers at three Bakersfield, Calif.-based outpatient clinics operated by the Dignity Health Medical Foundation voted to unionize.

5. Kaiser nurses secure 12% pay increase in finalized labor deal
Registered nurses and nurse practitioners at northern and central California facilities owned by Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente ratified a labor deal with the healthcare giant. 

6. Nurses at Stanford's ValleyCare Medical Center to join union
Nurses at Stanford Health Care's ValleyCare Medical Center in Pleasanton, Calif., voted to unionize April 18.

7. UPHS-Marquette nurses vote to put option for second strike on table
Nurses at Upper Peninsula Health System-Marquette (Mich.) opened the door for another strike.

8. Workers at Tenet hospital picket in California over patient care concerns
Medical technicians from Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree, Calif., picketed April 18 amid negotiations with the hospital's operator, Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare.

9. Union says Mayo retaliated against striking employees in new NLRB charges: 7 things to know
The Service Employees International Union Healthcare Minnesota filed new charges against Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic Health System, alleging the system retaliated against employees at its Albert Lea (Minn.) Campus following a one-day strike.

10. Chicago healthcare workers rally for higher pay
Healthcare workers across Chicago rallied over wages April 19.

11. Nurse unionization effort succeeds at Albany Medical Center
Nurses at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center voted April 12-13 to join the New York State Nurses Association.
