Healthcare union endorses Bernie Sanders

The National Union of Healthcare Workers, a group representing 11,000 healthcare workers at hospitals, nursing homes and clinics throughout California, has endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in his run for president.

Sen. Sanders' campaign announced the endorsement just hours before the first Democratic debate Tuesday, according to an International Business Times report.

The union said Sen. Sanders' support for a single-payer healthcare system and Medicare for all resonated with NUHW members.

"We've had a great relationship with Sen. Sanders for years," NUHW President Sal Rosselli said in a news release. "He's the real thing. He's been standing up for working Americans for decades. But no president can go it alone; it will take a bottom-up, grassroots movement to change the direction of our country. NUHW is proud to be part of that movement."

National Nurses United, the nation's largest organization of registered nurses, has also endorsed Sen. Sanders.
