1,200 NYU Winthrop Hospital workers vote to unionize

About 1,200 workers at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, N.Y., have voted to join the Service Employees International Union United Healthcare East, Local 1199, according to Newsday.

The union said Sept. 30 that the final vote was 817-142 for unionization.

The union told Newsday the vote affects dietary aides, nursing assistants and other workers, who will have the same benefits as unionized employees at other NYU Langone Health facilities, such as no-cost healthcare, a secure pension and childcare and education benefits.

NYU Winthrop told the newspaper: "We respect the National Labor Relations Board process and will continue to work in the best interests of our staff and our patients."

1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East represents more than 250,000 nurses and healthcare workers in New York and more than 450,000 members on the East Coast.
