WVU Medicine to absorb Pennsylvania hospital

Morgantown-based West Virginia University Health System inked a letter of intent to acquire Uniontown (Pa.) Hospital, the organizations announced Jan. 13.

The agreement comes after a "year of transition" for Uniontown Hospital, which began after the hospital ended a six-year clinical affiliation with Pittsburgh-based UPMC.

"We are excited to join with WVU Medicine and to look to the future of healthcare in Fayette County," Uniontown Hospital CEO Steve Handy said in a press release. "This is an opportunity to ensure exceptional care for our patients, to ensure that local healthcare remains available to all those who count on us, to continue to act as an economic driver and source for regional employment, and, ultimately, to continue to make a healthy difference in the lives we touch."

Under the agreement, WVU Medicine will manage Uniontown Hospital, but Mr. Handy and other senior leaders will retain their positions.

WVU Medicine is the largest health system in West Virginia and also operates hospitals and clinics in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Maryland.
