University Hospital in Kentucky Wants Partner By End of Year

The University of Louisville is negotiating with potential healthcare operators and hopes to reach a partnership agreement for its University Hospital by the end of the year, according to a Courier-Journal report.

The public-owned University Hospital said it couldn't survive unless it partnered with another hospital. It sought proposals from February through March 23. Officials have not said how many hospital companies responded but did say the university is in negotiations with all organizations that submitted proposals.

The tentative deadline for reaching an agreement is Sept. 28.

University Hospital was in talks last year with Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare in Louisville and St. Joseph Health System in Lexington, Ky. Denver-based Catholic Health Initiatives, the parent company of St. Joseph, would have had majority control over the new system.

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear rejected those original merger plans in late 2011 due to University Hospital's public status. In January, the two systems merged without University Hospital to form KentuckyOne Health.
