The New Hanover County board of commissioners is considering selling New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, N.C., as the hospital's ability to continue operating independently becomes unclear, according to the Port City Daily.
NHRMC President and CEO John Gizdic emphasized to local media outlets that should commissioners decide to explore a sale in an upcoming September meeting, the county could ultimately decide to retain ownership.
Mr. Gizdic also clarified that NHRMC is not financially struggling. The hospital sees more than a billion dollars in annual operating revenue. However, County Manager Chris Coudriet told the Port City Daily "uncertainty in the healthcare industry" is putting more pressure on the hospital.
Another major factor is the nearly $200 million NHRMC pays each year in charity care, Mr. Coudriet said, which is becoming more difficult for the hospital to cover.
