Jewish Hospital, Saint Joseph Health Form Kentucky System Sans University Hospital

Two systems within the initially proposed three-system merger in Kentucky — Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's HealthCare and Saint Joseph Health System — have announced they will merge today to form KentuckyOne Health, according to a news release.

The merger is effective retroactively to Jan. 1.

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear rejected the original merger plans, which included University Hospital in Louisville, last week. He met with the health systems' officials yesterday, an event that signaled merger discussions were not completely tabled.

KentuckyOne is a non-profit organization. "Historically Jewish facilities" and "historically Catholic facilities" united under the new parent company will continue to operate under their respective religious affiliations.

Ruth W. Brinkley — the former president and CEO of Tucson, Ariz.-based Carondelet Health Network — will head KentuckyOne as president and CEO.

Catholic Health Initiatives, the parent company of Saint Joseph, is investing $320 million to lunch KentuckyOne. The new statewide system will include more than 80 facilities, 2,500 staff physicians and 13,000 employees.
