Jersey City Council Opposes Expedited Sale of Christ Hospital to Prime

Jersey City (N.J.) council passed a resolution last week to oppose an expedited review of  the sale of Jersey City-based Christ Hospital to for-profit Prime Healthcare, based in Ontario, Calif., according to a Hudson Reporter article.

Prime has asked the state to approve the sale by Dec. 31. Prime has made a bid of $15.7 million for the hospital. The sale is necessary to keep financially-troubled Christ Hospital open, according to the report. It loses about $800,000 each month.

The council, however, opposed the request and said the review process must be "transparent." If Christ Hospital does sell to Prime, Jersey City Medical Center would be the only non-profit hospital remaining in the city.

Council members are concerned the transaction, and loss of a non-profit healthcare organization, will add stress to JCMC in terms of indigent care.
