Hospital M&A activity picks up pace: 4 key findings

Ayla Ellison -

There were 28 hospital transactions announced in the third quarter of fiscal year 2015, which puts this year on track to outpace merger and acquisition activity from 2014, according to a recent report by Ponder & Co.

Here are four things to know about hospital M&A activity in the third quarter.

1. Representing one-third of the M&A activity in the third quarter, the southeast was the busiest region for hospital deals.

2. Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Health announced three acquisitions in the third quarter, making it the most active for-profit hospital operator.

3. Five third-quarter transactions involved new joint ventures, conversions of joint ventures to full ownership models or the unwinding of joint ventures.

4. Regulatory challenges continued to cause delays in transactions in the third quarter. For example, Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services withdrew its proposed transaction with Los Altos, Calif.-based Daughters of Charity Health System due to conditions placed on the deal by the California attorney general.
