Hackensack Meridian Health, Carrier Clinic merge to improve behavioral health

Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health has merged with Belle Mead, N.J.-based behavioral health provider Carrier Clinic to improve behavioral healthcare —  a rare partnership between a behavioral health provider and multihospital system.

The merger includes plans for new addiction treatment centers in New Jersey, the state's first urgent care centers offering behavioral healthcare and a $25 million investment in facilities.

The $25 million investment will update Carrier's Belle Mead, N.J.-based campus, including recreational rooms for patients and wings to treat specific diseases, Carrier Clinic President Donald Parker told Becker's.

The merger also will improve care through a team of primary care physicians, psychiatrists and advanced practice nurses that will coordinate addiction treatment, routine care and mental health issues throughout Hackensack's 17-hospital network.

"We see this merger as a call to action for other healthcare leaders to improve behavioral health services," said Robert Garrett, CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health. "Mergers like these will become more important to provide care in a coordinated matter, and we're excited to have the opportunity to transform how behavioral healthcare is delivered."
