Markus Meier, a seasoned healthcare antitrust enforcer, has replaced Tad Lipsky as acting director of the Federal Trade Commission's competition bureau.

Mr. Lipsky retired from the commission July 3 after spending 40 years in antitrust law.

Mr. Meier served as acting deputy director under Mr. Lipsky and led the healthcare division within the Bureau of Competition since 2006. He comes with nearly 30 years of antitrust experience and, in his new position, will manage the bureau's nearly 300 employees.

Alan Devlin, Mr. Meier's fellow acting deputy director for the bureau, also left the Commission July 3 to enter private practice.

Most recently, the FTC's Bureau of Competition challenged Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health's proposed acquisition of Mid Dakota Clinic, claiming the deal would result in a physician group that holds at least 75 to 85 percent share in the provision of adult primary care, pediatric, and obstetrics and gynecology services.
