For-profit vs. nonprofit: A breakdown of hospital deals over the past 5 years

There has been a surge in the number of hospital mergers and acquisitions in the past five years, with most of the deals involving nonprofit hospital buyers, according to a recent report from Levin Associates.

Below is a breakdown of hospital transactions over the past five years.

2010: There were 76 hospital mergers and acquisitions in 2010, up from 50 deals the prior year. Forty of the transactions in 2010 involved nonprofit hospital buyers, while 36 involved for-profit hospital buyers.

2011: In 2011 there were 93 hospital mergers and acquisitions. Fifty-two of the transactions involved nonprofit hospital buyers, while 41 involved for-profit hospital buyers.

2012: In 2012 there were 107 hospital mergers and acquisitions. Sixty-nine of the transactions involved nonprofit hospital buyers, while 38 involved for-profit hospital buyers.

2013: In 2013 the total number of hospital mergers and acquisitions dipped slightly to 89. Fifty-nine of the transactions involved nonprofit hospital buyers, while 30 involved for-profit hospital buyers.

2014: In 2014 the total number of hospital mergers and acquisitions rose to 100. Sixty-five of the transactions involved nonprofit hospital buyers, while 35 involved for-profit hospital buyers.
