For-profit hospital M&A update: 15 deals involving CHS, Tenet, HCA and Quorum

Four for-profit hospital operators entered into several transactions in recent months. Some of the companies are selling off facilities to strengthen their hospital portfolios, while others are exploring ways to expand their reach.

Below is a breakdown of the transactions the for-profit hospital companies have entered into since Jan. 1.

Community Health Systems

Jan. 1: Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems completed the sale of Mary Black Health System, a two-hospital system based in Spartanburg, S.C. The company divested 207-bed Mary Black Health System-Spartanburg and 125-bed Mary Black Health System-Gaffney (S.C.), as well as their related businesses, to Spartanburg (S.C.) Regional Healthcare System.

Jan. 31: A nonprofit run by Bloomfield, N.J.-based Community Healthcare Associates completed its purchase of Salem, N.J.-based Memorial Hospital of Salem County from CHS.

March 1: CHS sold four South Carolina hospitals to Medical University of South Carolina Hospital Authority in Charleston. The transaction included the following hospitals: 82-bed Chester Regional Medical Center; 225-bed Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster; 396-bed Carolinas Hospital System in Florence; and 124-bed Carolinas Hospital System-Marion in Mullins.

July 31: CHS completed the sale of 167-bed College Station (Texas) Medical Center to Bryan, Texas-based CHI St. Joseph Health.

Aug. 1: CHS sold 245-bed Tennova Healthcare-Lebanon (Tenn.) to Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt University Medical Center. 

Sept. 1: CHS sold two Florida hospitals to Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth. The two hospitals included in the transaction were 193-bed Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center in Davenport and 160-bed Lake Wales (Fla.) Medical Center.

Oct. 1: CHS completed the sale of 92-bed Bluefield (W.Va.) Regional Medical Center to Princeton (W.Va.) Community Hospital.

Oct. 29: CHS entered into a definitive agreement to sell three Virginia hospitals to Cincinnati-based Bon Secours Mercy Health. The agreement includes the following hospitals: 300-bed Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, 105-bed Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin and 80-bed Southern Virginia Medical Center in Emporia.

HCA Healthcare 

Jan. 25: Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare signed a letter of intent to take over Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.H.

Feb. 1: HCA completed its acquisition of Mission Health, a six-hospital system based in Asheville, N.C. The $1.5 billion deal closed five months after HCA and Mission signed a definitive agreement.

July 1: HCA completed the purchase of 24 urgent care centers in Texas from Fresenius Medical Care, which is based in Germany.

Sept. 26: Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia, Ga., announced it signed a letter of intent to join HCA.

Quorum Health

April 15: Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health, a spinoff of Community Health Systems, completed the sale of Scenic Mountain Medical Center, a 146-bed hospital in Big Spring, Texas, to Dallas-based Steward Health Care.

Sept. 30: Quorum completed the divestiture of 106-bed Watsonville (Calif.) Community Hospital. Quorum sold the hospital to Los Angeles-based Halsen Healthcare roughly four months after the parties entered into a definitive agreement.

Tenet Healthcare

Jan. 29: Tenet announced it had completed the sale of its three remaining hospitals in the Chicago area: Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago; Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park, Ill.; and West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, Ill.
