Dignity Health, CHI push back merger date

San Francisco-based Dignity Health and Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives extended the expected closing date for their merger from Dec. 31, 2018, to Jan. 31, 2019.

Dignity and CHI entered into a definitive merger agreement in late 2017, and the transaction was expected to close by the end of this year. However, the systems have a few more tasks to complete before they can close the deal.

"We continue to finalize the last steps to bring our operations together and to combine our ministries, including the completion of licenses, certifications and other administrative items," Dignity said in a public filing Dec. 21. "We are looking forward to completing our alignment, and we also want to make sure this is seamless for those we serve."

After the deal closes, the combined $28.4 billion system will be called CommonSpirit Health. The new system will include more than 700 care sites and 139 hospitals.
