Cleveland Clinic takes over Akron General Health System

Ayla Ellison -

Cleveland Clinic took over full ownership of Akron (Ohio) General Health System Nov. 2, following review of the deal by the Ohio Attorney General and the Federal Trade Commission.

"This is a momentous day for healthcare in Ohio," said Delos "Toby" Cosgrove, MD, president and CEO of Cleveland Clinic. "We are pleased to welcome Akron General into our health system and we look forward to developing and expanding services and enhancing access for patients throughout Northeast Ohio."

Cleveland Clinic became a minority owner of Akron General in an agreement struck in 2014. Earlier this year, Cleveland Clinic exercised its option under the agreement to take on full ownership of Akron General.

Now that the deal is completed, one of the first initiatives is to replace Akron General's EMR with an Epic system.
