Cincinnati children's hospital moving to Dayton

Alia Paavola -

Shriners Hospitals for Children-Cincinnati plans to close its standalone hospital and move operations to Dayton (Ohio) Children's Hospital, according to the Cincinnati Business Courier.

The 51 year-old hospital, which is known for pediatric burn treatment, intends to operate as a "hospital within a hospital" by building and occupying space on the Dayton hospital's campus.

Hospital officials cited a steady decline in the severity and number of pediatric burn cases in the U.S. for the closure.

The closure and transition of operations is expected to happen later this year.

The Cincinnati-based Shriners Hospital will remain open while construction is completed in Dayton.

The hospital has about 218 employees. It is unclear whether the move will result in layoffs.
