Elkton, Md.-based Union Hospital signed a letter of intent to join Wilmington, Del.-based Christiana Care Health System.

After a period of negotiation and due diligence, if a final affiliation agreement is reached, Union Hospital and its affiliates will become part of Christiana Care Health System, a nonprofit organization that includes two hospitals, home health care, medical aid units and a network of outpatient services. Christiana Care is also a teaching health system with more than 260 residents and fellows.

Union Hospital is a full-service community hospital with 72 licensed beds, 1,300 staff members and 375 physicians.

"Christiana Care and Union Hospital have been serving the people of Cecil County as neighbors for many years," said Janice E. Nevin, MD, Christiana Care Health System's president and CEO. "We welcome this opportunity to explore a closer relationship with an organization that shares our commitment to value and service to the community."
