CarePoint, RWJBarnabas at impasse over sale of 2 New Jersey hospitals

CarePoint wants RWJBarnabas Health to pay at least $60 million more to buy two of its hospitals in New Jersey, according to The Jersey Journal.

West Orange, N.J.-based RWJBarnabas Health signed a letter of intent last October to buy two hospitals from Jersey City, N.J.-based CarePoint Health. The two hospitals are Christ Hospital, based in Jersey City, and Hoboken (N.J.) University Medical Center.

Negotiations between the two parties hit a standstill earlier this month. RWJBarnabas said that CarePoint rejected "a fair appropriate offer" to acquire the two facilities.

In an effort to revive negotiations between CarePoint and RWJBarnabas, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop and state legislators sat down with the two health systems this week.

People familiar with the discussions at the meeting told The Journal that the two sides are about $60 million apart from reaching a deal. One major sticking point in those discussions is the value of the Christ Hospital property, the sources said.

It is unclear how much RWJBarnabas initially offered to buy the facilities.
