Berkshire Health Systems May Acquire Northern Berkshire Healthcare's Assets

Staff -

Officials with Berkshire Health Systems in Pittsfield, Mass., have entered negotiations to possibly acquire the assets of the bankrupt and shuttered Northern Berkshire Healthcare, based in North Adams, Mass., according to a Berkshire Eagle report.

A deal between Berkshire Health Systems, Northern Berkshire Healthcare and bondholders has not yet been reached, but the parties will meet again next week, according to the report.

Northern Berkshire Healthcare shocked its community in March when it abruptly closed North Adams Regional Hospital and the rest of its operations, resulting in the layoffs of more than 500 employees. Last week, the system also filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Berkshire Medical Center has since hired some of those displaced employees.

In early 2013, Northern Berkshire Healthcare was in discussions with Berkshire Health Systems about a potential takeover. However, a deal was never finalized.
