The following healthcare mergers, acquisitions and general partnerships took place or were announced the week of May 29.

1. Maine Medical Center to acquire ownership of church-owned rehabilitation hospital
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland signed a memorandum of understanding to transfer ownership of Portland, Maine-based Saint Joseph's Rehabilitation and Residence to Maine Medical Center, also in Portland.

2. Alecto Healthcare Services completes acquisition of 2 hospitals in West Virginia, Ohio
Alecto Healthcare Services, a four-hospital system in Irvine, Calif., finalized its purchase of Wheeling, W.Va.-based Ohio Valley Medical Center and Martins Ferry-based East Ohio Regional Hospital May 31.

3. International Medical Corps, FedEx create mobile hospital to respond to global natural disasters
The International Medical Corps in Los Angeles and FedEx Express partnered on a 50-ton portable emergency response hospital that can be transported around the world to provide medical assistance following a natural disaster.

4. Mount Sinai, CHOP collaborate on fetal medicine program, cardiac care
New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia strengthened their alliance by creating a joint fetal medicine program and aligning the Mount Sinai Children's Heart Center and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Cardiac Center.

5. Mercy, St. Anthony's Medical Center finalize affiliation
Mercy Hospital St. Louis and St. Anthony's Medical Center, also in St. Louis, finalized their affiliation agreement.

6. University of Miami, Jackson Health extend clinical collaboration
Miami-based Jackson Health System and the University of Miami will continue their 65-year partnership for another year after trustees of the county's public hospital network approved two agreements between the organizations, worth $136.6 million.

7. Mayo Clinic and Baxter to collaborate on R&D
Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic and Deerfield, Ill.-based Baxter International, a global medical product company, established a research and development collaboration aimed at advancing innovation across various therapeutic areas.

8. CHS to divest 5 hospitals to Reading Health System
West Reading, Pa.-based Reading Health System entered into an asset purchase agreement to acquire five hospitals owned and operated by Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems.  

9. CoxHealth, Citizens Memorial Hospital call off affiliation plans
Donald Babb, CEO and executive director of Bolivar, Mo.-based Citizens Memorial Hospital and Citizens Memorial Health Care Foundation said the hospital terminated its plans to affiliate with Springfield, Mo.-based CoxHealth.
