The following healthcare mergers, acquisitions and general transactions took place or were announced within the past week.

1. Waterbury Hospital unveils new plans after failed Tenet deal
Waterbury (Conn.) Hospital announced Prospect Medical Holdings, a for-profit hospital operator based in Los Angeles, is interested in acquiring it, making PMH the third potential buyer for the hospital in five years.

2. Washington Health System looks to expand network
Brentwood, Tenn.-based RegionalCare Hospital Partners entered into an agreement with Washington (Pa.) Health System to transfer ownership of Southwest Regional Medical Center in Waynesburg, Pa., to WHS.

3. Samaritan Regional Health System, University Hospitals to explore affiliation
Cleveland-based University Hospitals and Ashland, Ohio-based Samaritan Regional Health System signed a letter of intent to integrate SRHS into the UH system.

4. NJ health commissioner approves Prime Healthcare's purchase of St. Clare's Health System
Mary O'Dowd, state health commissioner of New Jersey, approved the sale of Denville, N.J.-based St. Clare's Health System to Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services.

5. Abington Health, Jefferson University Hospitals finalize merger
Abington (Pa.) Health and Philadelphia-based Jefferson University Hospitals completed their merger.
