2 Public Hospitals Near New Orleans Look to Lease Facilities

Staff -
The Jefferson Parish Council — which oversees East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie, La., and West Jefferson Medical Center in Marrero, La. — has asked the state if it could lease the two hospitals, according to a Times-Picayune report.

Under state law, the hospital district, which is near New Orleans, can sell or lease the public hospitals "only if the proposed sale or lease is approved by a majority of the qualified electors of the hospital service district," according to the report.

Hospital district representatives said the 420-bed East Jefferson and 427-bed West Jefferson are entertaining lease offers from three health systems for potential partnerships, and officials want to bypass the voter referendum to "make it easier for officials to evaluate the proposals fairly," according to the report.
