Massachusetts' Beth Israel Deaconess, Lahey Clinic in Talks to Merge

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and The Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass., are discussing a possible merger, according to a Boston Globe report.

Both teaching hospitals have emphasized the talks are preliminary, but a Lahey spokesperson confirmed that a draft document was shared with BIDMC to begin merger explorations, according to the report.

Sources close to the proposal say Lahey president Howard Grant, MD, has a "vision" to form a parent corporation with its own CEO to oversee a fully-integrated healthcare system of two teaching hospitals and approximately six community hospitals, according to the report. A Lahey spokesperson also said Dr. Grant has been talking to "almost every single teaching hospital in the state," according to the report.

This merger would not be the first transaction 631-bed BIDMC has in the works. The hospital recently announced plans to merge with Milton (Mass.) Hospital by October. https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/hospital-transactions-and-valuation-issues/massachusetts-beth-israel-and-milton-hospital-plan-to-merge-by-october.html
