President Dr. Peter Slavin: Leading Massachusetts General Hospital to Greatness

Staff -
Peter Slavin, MD, has served as president of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston since 2003. He also is a professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston, where he teaches internal medicine and healthcare management.

Prior to taking the hospital's reins, Dr. Slavin served as chairman and CEO of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, a group of more than 1,700 physicians.

Under the leadership of Dr. Slavin, Massachusetts General has made great strides. In 2012, U.S. News & World Report ranked Massachusetts General as the best hospital in the nation. The hospital is also Magnet-recognized for excellence in nursing and has been designated as a Top Hospital by The Leapfrog Group. Dr. Slavin credits his staff for the hospital's success. "We are very fortunate to have 23,000 very talented and dedicated employees led by a great group of chiefs and vice presidents," he told Becker's Hospital Review last year. "Those are the people who deserve all the credit."

But organizations have given Dr. Slavin credit, and recognition, for Massachusetts General's achievements and his success. Becker's Hospital Review named him to its 2012 lists of 100 Leaders of Great Hospitals and 300 Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know. He was also recently named chairman of the Massachusetts Hospital Association, an organization he has been involved with for four years.

Dr. Slavin earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1984.
