Weill Cornell med school names Dr. Barbara Hempstead dean

The Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences appointed Barbara Hempstead, MD, PhD, dean, effective Jan. 14, the New York City-based institution announced Jan. 11.

Four things to know:

1. In her new role, Dr. Hempstead will build on the school's academic reputation, encourage interdisciplinary collaborations between university programs and advance the institution's commitment to recruitment initiatives.

2. Dr. Hempstead has worked at the institution for more than 30 years and has served as the co-chief of the hematology and medical oncology division and associate dean for faculty development. She most recently served as senior associate dean for education for Weill Cornell Medical College's academic medical program.

"Some of my happiest moments over the last 30 years have been working with medical and graduate students and post-docs, helping them become successful physicians and scientists," Dr. Hempstead said. "Serving as dean of the graduate school continues a mission I'm passionate about: building foundations for the next generation."

3. A board-certified hematologist, Dr. Hempstead's research investigates growth factors that regulate cellular behavior. She has continuously received funding from the National Institutes of Health for more than three decades and owns four patents for her work.

4. She received her bachelor's degree in biology from Medford, Mass.-based Tufts University in 1976 and her medical degree and doctorate degree in cellular biology from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
