Wash U medical school gives political action committee $250K

Emily Rappleye -

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis gave $250,000 on Nov. 15 to a political action committee to support Medicaid expansion, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The PAC, Missourians for Healthcare, is working to get Medicaid expansion added to the ballot next fall in Missouri. States like Utah, Nebraska and Maine have expanded Medicaid via ballot initiatives, according to the report.

The decision to fund the effort followed a Nov. 4 letter from Washington University Chancellor Andrew Martin, PhD, and School of Medicine Dean David Perlmutter, MD, to the academic community in support of Medicaid expansion, according to the report.

"As a major healthcare provider and a top research institution dedicated to improving people's lives, we strongly believe Medicaid expansion is right for Missouri," Drs. Martin and Perlmutter wrote.
