UW-Madison launches AMA-backed LGBTQ+ healthcare fellowship

The American Medical Association has selected the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison to launch the nation's first national LGBTQ+ fellowship program, the organization said July 20.

UW-Madison received a $750,000 grant from AMA Foundation to develop the physician training program. The first fellows will be recruited to begin training in July 2022. The program will then accept one fellow annually, aiming to recruit three fellows each year by the program's fifth year.

The goal of the fellowship program is to address systemic health inequities and lack of quality care for the LGBTQ+ community, the American Medical Association said. The association aims to expand this program to train hundreds of fellows nationwide to create a stronger workforce of LGBTQ+ health specialists.
