Burlington-based University of Vermont approved a new one-year master's in medical science program, which is designed to be a precursor to medical school for students who want to raise their board scores and improve their chances of landing a top medical school, according to VTDigger.

The 30-credit program is described as an "on-ramp to medical school" and will include biomedical science curriculum. It is meant for students who lack the necessary credentials for medical school, according to the report.

The program will enroll its first class of 25 students beginning fall 2015. Coursework will be taught by University of Vermont College of Medicine faculty and funding will be built into tuition, according to the report.

The university also announced plans to launch an undergraduate online health sciences program.
