University of Kentucky plans 3rd regional medical school

Kelly Gooch -

The University of Kentucky in Lexington said Monday it plans to develop a new medical school regional campus.

UK aims to develop the campus in northern Kentucky, in partnership with Edgewood, Ky.-based St. Elizabeth Healthcare and Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, according to a news release.

"In Kentucky we have a shortage of physicians, especially primary care physicians, throughout the state," UK President Eli Capilouto said in the release. "We are working in close partnership with leading universities in our state and regional medical centers to directly respond to this need. Additionally, this collaboration will allow us to expand college of medicine enrollment in a manner that effectively and efficiently utilizes existing resources throughout the state."

News of the planned new campus comes as the UK also has proposed four-year regional campuses in Bowling Green and Morehead, Ky., the release states. UK said all three campuses are designed to help increase Kentucky's overall number of physicians. They expect the campus at Bowling Green to begin enrolling students next year, and Morehead sometime after that.
