UnitedHealth Group is reportedly revising the way it pays physicians and hospitals through the creation of "value-based" contracts that will reward providers for high-quality and efficient care, according to a Reuters report.
Providers will be able to enter into the new contracts by choice. By 2015, 50 to 70 percent of UnitedHealth's commercially insured members could be affected by the contracts. Under the new system, UnitedHealth would potentially withhold expected increases if providers did not meet certain standards.
The Wall Street Journal initially released the news, as the company had sent documents with information on the new payment system to employer clients. A UnitedHealth spokesperson confirmed the authenticity of the documents, but did not release further comment.
