U of South Florida seeking $21M in state funding for downtown medical school

Alyssa Rege -

Tampa-based University of South Florida officials plan to ask state lawmakers for an additional $21 million in funding to complete construction on its USF Health Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute in downtown Tampa, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The state already provided $91 million in funding toward the school's construction, the report states.

USF officials said they decided to construct a new campus to position the medical school geographically closer to Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital, the medical school's primary teaching hospital affiliate. Construction on the campus is expected to be completed in 2019, officials said.

USF President and CEO Judy Genshaft, PhD, told the Orlando Sentinel the creation of a new medical school campus spurred a 60-plus percent increase in medical school applications and has helped the university garner more research funding.
