U of Nebraska Med Center carves out new allergy, immunology division

Emily Rappleye -

Omaha-based University of Nebraska Medical Center's department of internal medicine created an official, four-physician division for allergy and immunology care and research, it announced Jan. 9.

Previously, that work was done in a division that also included pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine. UNMC says the establishment of a separate division for allergy medicine reflects a greater need for patient services in the specialty.

The new division will be led by Jill Poole, MD, who was the first allergist recruited to UNMC in 2005, a professor at the medical school and medical director of allergy and immunology for Nebraska Medicine. She earned her medical degree at UNMC and completed her residency at Washington University at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Dr. Poole completed an allergy, asthma and immunology fellowship at National Jewish Medical and Research Center/University of Colorado Health Center in Denver.

"I have always had passion for UNMC since I was medical student here in the 1990s," said Dr. Poole in a press release. "UNMC has always been a great institution for which I have tremendous pride in. I am excited about all the growth areas we have targeted for the division, including expansion of clinical research, community outreach, and continual commitment to patients in our region to provide cutting-edge, quality allergy and immunology care."
