U of Houston appoints Dr. Stephen Spann founding dean of medical school

The University of Houston named Stephen J. Spann, MD, founding dean of the planned UH College of Medicine Feb. 26.

Here are four things to know about Dr. Spann.

1. Dr. Spann was appointed planning dean of the medical school in 2015, and has directly assisted in creating an academically desirable and financially feasible plan for the school.

2. Dr. Spann received his medical degree from the Houston-based Baylor College of Medicine and completed his residency in family medicine at Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Medical Center.

3. Prior to working at the University of Houston, Dr. Spann served as CMO of Tawam Hospital in the United Arab Emirates, which is managed by Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine International.

4. Dr. Spann has also held numerous leadership positions at various academic medical institutions throughout his career, including Oklahoma City-based University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and Baylor College of Medicine.
