The New York City-based New York University announced the creation of a three-year medical school in Mineola, N.Y., on Feb. 19.
Four things to know:
1. The NYU Long Island School of Medicine's accelerated three-year MD program, which received accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education on Feb. 12, will focus on training primary care physicians. The school will be located on the NYU Winthrop Hospital campus in Mineola.
"There is a growing trend towards a flexible, accelerated MD curriculum for students who know early on the area of medicine in which they wish to specialize," Steven Shelov, MD, founding dean of the NYU Long Island School of Medicine, said in a news release. "We've worked closely with the LCME to develop a comprehensive and rigorous program that meets the needs of today's students, and we look forward to collaborating further on the next steps in establishing the new medical school."
2. NYU officials said they plan to accept 24 students into its inaugural class in July 2019, with additional slots opening in subsequent years to accomodate 40 students in each of its three classes.
3. Medical school students at the Long Island campus will have their full tuition covered as part of NYU's decision to waive tuition for medical students last August. The NYU Long Island School of Medicine will be the institution's second medical school. Its other medical school is located in New York City.
4. Officials expect to receive approval from the New York State Education Department for the medical school in the spring.
