Texas ER physician dies in crash after hospital shift

Robert Fanning, MD, emergency room physician at Uvalde (Texas) Memorial Hospital, died when his vehicle veered into oncoming traffic soon after he finished a shift Thursday morning, according to the Uvalde Leader-News.

Dr. Fanning, 74, was pronounced dead on the scene. The Texas Department of Public Safety revealed Dr. Fanning was traveling east on Texas Highway 90.

"For reasons not yet known, Mr. Fanning veered into the westbound lane and struck head-on a [vehicle]," said Sgt. Orlando Moreno, public information officer for DPS. The driver of the other vehicle is listed in critical condition.

All contributing factors are not yet known and the investigation is ongoing. Sgt. Moreno is encouraging drivers to minimize distractions and to never drive fatigued.
