State OKs $12M budget for Florida medical education project

Alyssa Rege -

The Florida state legislature set aside $12 million in its proposed 2018 budget for the construction of Tampa-based University of South Florida's new medical education and research center, according to Florida Politics.

The amount was roughly $5 million less than USF officials had requested from the state, according to the report.

The USF Health Building is part of a $3 billion real estate development deal in downtown Tampa. To date, the legislature has reportedly provided nearly $79 million in funds to construct the $152.6 million building.

A spokesperson for USF told Florida Politics the university was "very pleased to receive $12 million for the USF downtown project in this year's state budget. It will keep the project on schedule and [the university thanks] our state leaders for their continued support."

The state legislature will reportedly vote on the proposed budget Monday.
